Islamic Affairs Magazine (or Islamic Affairs) is a recently-launched online magazine that covers contemporary and historical issues concerning the Islamic world. This includes subjects ranging from current trends in Islamic political thought to analyses of historical events and concepts in Islamic thought and history. Most importantly, since it is a religious publication, the aim of the magazine is to revive and renew the tradition of using the Qur’an and Sunnah – the authoritative texts of Islamic belief and law – in the 21st century.
In current times, there is mass-confusion surrounding both religious and political issues in the Muslim world. One not need name the countless number of ‘divisions’ or ‘sects’ and the range of extremity of ideas in Islamic religious thought that exist in the world today. Beyond the basic ‘theological’ divisions (e.g., Sunni and Shi’a – which are actually political divisions as well), the political divisions in the Islamic world far exceed other affairs in the Muslims world in terms of urgency. There is not a single Muslim-majority country in the world that applies Islamic law to its fullest extent and in its proper manner, let alone a state that can attempt to represent and unite Muslims under one banner: a single way of life.
“In fact, one could say that differentiating between good and evil is the entire message of Islam, and that which was propagated 1400 years ago and countless millennia before that.”
There are at least 50 independent Muslim states in the world, and a countless number of political divisions within them. All of them ascribe to the same positions outlined below – all detrimental to the concept of religious unity and rule of law defined in the Qur’an:
- The adoption of the modern, western notion of the nation-state
- Secularism: both ‘theocratic’ and ‘democratic’ ‘Muslim’ countries ascribe to the tenet of there being a difference between rule of law and ‘Islamic affairs’ which are reduced subjected to be applied based on political expedience
- Represent, or claim to represent, the people who are members of the state, as opposed to Muslims as a whole
This is a very short and summarized list that covers a long history of events that include a vast number of human rights abuses resulting from outright rejection of the message of Islam as outlined in Islamic law.
So, what is the solution to these problems, if any? Both logic, and the Qur’an and prophetic traditions tell us that the solution to problems within the Muslim world, which apply to the entire world – ‘Muslim’ or not – is to advocate for and organize to establish a political entity that does exactly the opposite of what exists today: establish justice by enjoining the good and prohibiting the evil, otherwise known as the “khilafah ‘ala minhāj al-nubuwwah,” or “[political] successorship upon the method of the Prophecy,” which is a well-established principle in Islamic law, but is not applied today.
In fact, one could say that differentiating between good and evil is the entire message of Islam, and that which was propagated 1400 years ago and countless millennia before that. The wellbeing of people from an individual (spiritual) and moral, familial, communal, and legal-political level is all that anybody could ask for in this life, and is exactly what Islam offers.
Whether on an individual, philosophical, spiritual, or sociopolitical level, this Magazine is dedicated to the propagation of the message that fulfills the purpose of every human life at all levels, and welcomes submissions from scholars and non-scholars alike.
